Paid music downloads through the internet have tripled in the U.S. in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2004 according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Nielsen says American internet users downloaded 158 million individual songs from January to June 2005, compared with 55 million during the same period in 2004. During the same period, U.S. CD sales fell by 7%
As a result, single-song downloads account for 6% of overall music sales, up by 4% compared to last year.
Downloading music is an international phenomenon. In the United Kingdom, the number of legally downloaded songs for 2005 has reached 10 million - that’s double the number for all of 2004.
